THREE YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR IVORY POACHERS of Rajaji National Park

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate has awarded three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs.10000 to Mr. Jagdish, the main accused in the Elephant poaching and Ivory Trading case
caught by forest officials of the Rajaji National Park, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. They had seized 25kg tusks and arrested two persons of Laldhang area. The other accused died during the trial period. Though the accused was awarded the minimum prescribed punishment, let us rejoice that it took only four years in this case for the first verdict. Elephant tusks are also being traded across the border at Dharchula in Pithoragarh, where there are no elephants, but is a safe transborder route. This year 22kg tusk was seized by the SSB at Dharchula when they were trying to be sent across the Kali river by means of a local ropeway.
